This casual all-day diner “by the sea” is made for friends and sunny catch-ups, enhanced by its cool beachside location and Med and Middle Eastern flair.
Depending on the weather, stepping into Island Market can feel either cooling or cosy. Whatever the elements are doing, though, the welcome is reliably sunny, perpetually backed up by those stunning sea views.
Don’t skip the fluffy wood-fired pita for starters, which can be paired with a multitude of offerings
The menu may nod to the Levant, but the trick here is to remember you’re in a Kailis restaurant, so expect produce – especially seafood – to shine. Shark Bay prawns, say, butterflied and wood roasted and dressed with tartare and lime. Or tender Albany octopus alongside savoury preserved tomato. Don’t skip the fluffy wood-fired pita for starters, which can be paired with a multitude of offerings: chorizo with lemon for squeezing, maybe, or one of four colourful dips on offer, such as tahini-infused pumpkin. Tahini shines again with freekeh as an accompaniment for juicy grilled chicken.
Even if the Aleppo-spiced chips could be crisper and more herb-packed, the tone is set to enjoyment, the drinks list dialled to refreshment, with cocktails being ferried to all corners of the chic, resort-styled room. And there’s no faulting the pavlova, a topping of spiced apple and pear speaking to seasonality. Squeeze it in, then add a walk along the beach for afters.
