Flavour-packed Indonesian fare backed by sambal that hums with spice.

 Ah Beng Indonesia may be tucked away on the rooftop of a shopping centre in close proximity to TGI Fridays, but don’t let its location fool you. Wherever it may be (its former digs was in a carpark) one thing’s for certain: Ah Beng serves some of the state’s finest Indonesian fare.

Anyone who’s had just one taste of their sambal will attest to its addictiveness, so unsurprisingly this is a place that draws repeat visitors, often to see where else they can squeeze the beautifully fragrant sauce into their life. It might bring sweet spice and hum to boiled and crisp-fried eggs, or it could cover smashed-up fried chicken in a rendition of the ever-popular ayam geprek (so good the menu lists it with three exclamation points). Ikan bakar ketjap, meanwhile, sees it come on the side of a plate of scored, grilled local fish marinated in sticky-sweet kecap manis.

It’s not all about the sambal, either. Soto ayam, the chicken noodle soup, is a specialty, and a good order for solo diners. But the best way to go here is to roll up with a crowd, each take your pick, order at the counter from friendly staff and load up the table (still coated in laminated comic strips) with things to share. Just don’t forget to grab a jar of sambal for the road.
