Chimes Spa Retreat Denmark

Dip into the bag of spa writing clichés and “a break from the daily grind” would surely be right up there.

But clichés are clichés for a reason, after all, and Chimes Spa Retreat offers that much-needed break and then some. For many visitors, getting to Denmark on the wild Southern Ocean coast of the Great Southern is a bit of a mission. Yet, those in the know will tell you that it’s classic road-trip territory for those venturing from Perth or those who’ve looped in from the west and Margaret River. As you allow yourself to go with the flow at Chimes Spa Retreat, those long-drive aches or any residual life stresses dissipate completely. A purpose-built retreat on Mount Shadforth (or Wakundup as it’s also known), the property has been given some serious TLC by owner Jeanne Herholdt. A substantial renovation brought natural materials into play, and added not just polish, but all-important personal touches: art that had hung in Herholdt’s South African family home, and a constantly evolving exhibition of works by local artists. What’s more, you’ve got barbecue facilities, a pool table, board games and a working fireplace at your disposal, so even if spa treatments aren’t on the agenda, you’ll be able to unwind your way. A retreat in the truest sense.

Need to Knows

  • 10 guest suites (Garden Suite, Ocean View Suite, Horizon Suite, Oasis Suite, Sanctuary Suite, Loft Suite).
  • Check-in: 2pm; Check-out: 11am
  • Each suite has a freestanding bathtub or double-spa Jacuzzi, as well as a large TV, tea and coffee facilities and complimentary WiFi. Some larger suites offer private balconies and kitchenettes.
  • Each suite has dedicated parking, and there’s an EV charger on-site.

What’s There

The big draw here is certainly the day spa with circuits through the private steam and sauna rooms, as well as a cold plunge. Throw in one of many aromatherapy massages and perhaps a facial or body treatment and you’ll emerge renewed. Book a two-night stay through WAGFG Stays and a free Spa Oasis Experience is included. Beyond the spa, a covered pool with walkways through the property’s garden adds a sense of tranquillity. And yes, those long and lingering looks at the distant ocean are tough to beat.

What’s Around

As far as perfect Denmark days go, a flat white at Ravens Coffee followed by a tour of the subregion’s wineries would be up there. Slot in a few treatments, a swim or a hike, and it becomes a case of rinse and repeat.

What’s Super Special

The pampering doesn’t end as you leave the day spa. Each suite has a freestanding tub, and in more spacious rooms like the Loft Suite you’ll find a double-spa Jacuzzi with daytime views of the ocean and views of a (hopefully) starlit sky at night. Draw a bath, light a candle.

While the retreat isn’t ideally suited to very young children, guests aged 16 years and older are invited to use the facilities and reserve spa treatments. Children over the age of 12 can join parents or guardians for a spa experience in one of the double-occupancy treatment rooms.

Continental-style breakfast is served from 8-9:30am, comprising cold meats and cheese, bread, fruit, cereals, juices and coffee. You can dine in the south-facing dining room or grab a spot on the Hamptons-style loungers for Southern Ocean views.

Eating and Drinking

Denmark has started to carve more of its own culinary furrow in recent years. Locals will proudly tell you that you don’t need to go to Albany to eat, pointing you in the direction of places like The Dam at Raintree, Pepper & Salt Restaurant and bar-cum-restaurant Flame Trees Denmark.

Things to Book

In the busier seasons, restaurant bookings are always recommended. And, perhaps it goes without saying, but ensure you’ve got your spa treatments locked in well in advance.

If all those distant views of the Southern Ocean get too much, head to Greens Pool (roughly a 20-minute drive away) for a life-affirming early morning dip. You’ll find local swimming groups taking advantage of the sheltered spot year-round.
