Margaritas and Mexicana grunge mingle at La Cholita, Perth’s mainstay for tacos and tequila.

La Cholita has been slinging tortillas since long before the Mexicana craze brought a wave of taquerias to Perth, and its experience shows with a simple, flavour-packed menu that knows how to please everybody, yet still nod to tradition. A list of pared-back tacos – beef brisket with salsa roja, perhaps, or Baja-style fish – are must orders, as is a plate of tender grilled chicken over mole verde, a vibrant crowdpleaser.

Unsurprisingly for a venue in the heart of Northbridge, the drinks are just as much of a draw. Tequila is ubiquitous, with around 180 bottles on offer alongside a list of Margaritas and other tequila-based cocktails. The spicy Margarita Verde comes highly recommended, and for good reason, but if you’re looking to venture into the extensive list of agave spirit, take your cues from the staff, who’ll happily compare the varying merits of blanco, reposado and añejo for you.

The space itself, perched on a corner, is fittingly playful, with sugar-skull murals adorning the walls and sombreros perched perkily behind the bar, and the tone is one of celebration above all. A decadent chimichanga stuffed with dulce de leche ice-cream is a fine finish, but why not throw caution to the wind and take the cocktail list for another spin?
