While many will expect complexity and profundity from a wine at the apex of the list, this comes a little more from left field. It’s striking for its freshness and summery feel, as well as its bright perfume, fine tannins, vibrant red-berry fruitiness and liberal dusting of spice. The drinkability is off the charts. What’s more, it also speaks of the zeitgeist in WA, where a lesser-sung variety in an old, but somewhat maligned region, can produce such an incredibly delicious, moreish and memorable wine.
