Nadi Nature Resort

There are several essential ingredients at play that are likely to make Nadi Nature Resort a stay you don’t just remember fondly but repeat and recommend. You’re likely driving north to reach the property and as you climb up through narrow roads flanked by forest and rice fields you notice that the levels of development drop away, mountains appearing in the distance. Perhaps a Bali you’ve never experienced before. If your driver is local, they may tell you that there are very few places to stay up here in Angseri. It all adds to the feeling that this is a place to rest, to ground, breathe a little deeper, and that you are lucky to be here.

Founders, Aishah Fauzi and Punit Gajwani had very different lives in Hong Kong before they imagined this regenerative mountain sanctuary. Fauzi is a former corporate lawyer. It’s immediately obvious that she’s thrown her talents into the sustainability mission here as she walks the productive areas of the garden pointing out the permaculture principles in place and talks about their light footprint in building their dream. Gajwani, a certified sommelier with over a decade of Michelin experience, has turned his hand to the hospitality and culinary aspects. It all comes together as a homely yet boutique experience – feeling closer to nature, the noise of the streams and waterfall better than any Silicon Valley sleep app.

What’s There

Options abound but really it’s all to do with why you’re here. You may simply want to relax in your tent, on your deck area or take to the dedicated spa space which takes advantage of sweeping valley views. Natural oil treatments and signature massages are available. You may want to go a little more spiritual with a water blessing from a Balinese priest or learn how to make temple offerings. For some the reason for staying or a happy coincidence may be discovering the environment side of Nadi Nature Resort, with forest walks, foraging experiences or a tour of the farm and greenhouse.

What’s Around

Within 30 minutes of Nadi Nature Resort there are waterfalls and rafting for the adventurous while for those who are looking for more of a cultural immersion nearby Desa Pinge, a traditional Balinese village, offers that experience, as does a visit to the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Breakfast

An all-day affair breakfast runs until 4pm in the traditionally built structure that houses the café or in your tent if you’ve ordered. You’ll find the usual suspects of avo on toast, a seasonal smoothie bowl and guiltless French toast (it’s vegan and gluten free) but dishes like masala omelette and bhurji on baguette (Indian style scrambled eggs) point to something interesting that’s happening across the menu. While Nadi Nature Resort is predominantly adults-only they welcome guests aged 12 and above.

Eating and Drinking

With Gajwani having spent his career working in the rarified end of hospitality the thought of using family recipes on the menu filled him with a degree of apprehension. It needn’t have because, perhaps with exception of the Nasi Goreng (delivered to the tent after dark in a tiered tiffin box), the eye goes to the likes of the Rajasthani chicken curry, and the palak chicken curry. While other parts of the menu are no doubt accomplished, once you’ve tried the smoky masala eggplant grilled and charred on an open flame, and seasoned with house made masala, there’s no going back. Perhaps it’s the personal connection or that it seems like mountain-appropriate fare. It’s just damn good.

Notes

For those who have mobility issues or perhaps a dislike of stairs Nadi Nature Resort may not be for you. The properties topography is such that to reach the tents you need to take steep stairways down into the valley. While the resort has a porter to carry luggage up and down and it all somewhat adds to the experience, it may not be for everyone. Also, think ahead when leaving as apps such as Grab aren’t effective in these parts. The Nadi Nature Resort team can book you a competent local driver in advance.
