Perth & Surrounds

DoubleTree by Hilton Perth Waterfront

Could this be Perth’s best hotel view? DoubleTree by Hilton Perth Waterfront sits so close to the banks of the Swan River that you could almost throw in a fishing line from the heated rooftop pool (but it’s probably best to leave the seafood to the expert culinary team at Reel Kitchen restaurant on Level 2).

With 229 rooms and suites across 18 floors, the hotel makes the most of its prime position at Elizabeth Quay. Many rooms  give guests wraparound views of the water while others frame glittering panoramas of the city skyline and Bell Tower.

From the moment you arrive the front desk team makes  you feel genuinely at home, not least when they offer you one of their famous daily-baked choc-chip cookies (don’t be surprised if you leave with a souvenir tin tucked into your suitcase).

Up top, Perth’s famous sunsets take centre stage over a pina colada and stuffed jalapenos at 18 Knots Rooftop Bar, and the city is sitting right beneath your feet when you’re ready to explore. It’s a dress circle seat to book when you need a sleek urban escape.

Need to Knows

  • Number of rooms 229
  • Check-in 3PM  Check–out 11AM
  • Heated rooftop pool open 6AM to sunset
  • 24/7 Gym
  • Five event spaces including options for catering, decor and meeting equipment

Even if you’re visiting purely for business, DoubleTree by Hilton Perth Waterfront manages to make a work trip feel like play. The entire hotel feels spacious and airy, from the high-ceilinged lobby, to the sleek mirrored sculptures that decorate the stairwells, to the relaxed lounging spaces that are dotted across multiple floors.

Like all Hiltons, the rooms are designed for maximum comfort and functionality. The showers are intuitive and easy to operate, there’s plenty of space for clothes and makeup and the tech just works. Beds are made with premium linens, plump, soft-touch mattresses and pillows, setting the scene for a refreshing night’s sleep. Add those knockout views, and you’re guaranteed a pretty good wakeup, too. Make use of the 24 hour gym if that’s your thing, or take a morning dip in the rooftop infinity pool.

A buffet breakfast is a great way to fuel the day, and a generous evening meal overlooking the water, or maybe a margarita beside the pool when the day’s meetings are over, are a great way to wind things down. However you use it, DoubleTree Hilton Perth Waterfront makes every stay feel contemporary, unfussy and effortlessly polished.

What’s around

Elizabeth Quay is Perth’s best-known waterfront precinct, packed with lively bars, restaurants and cafes. At the right time of year there could be fireworks, light installations, outdoor cinema sessions or community yoga.

The Rottnest ferries sit right on your doorstep, and the Island Playground is a great spot for the kids to work off some energy (followed by a Gusto Gelato afterwards).

What’s super special

Hilton, famously, never forgets the little things.  The King Guest Panoramic River View Rooms, for example, have bathrooms with glass panels facing out to the bedroom, but the thoughtful privacy blind is easy to find and operate. The regular SMS check-ins from the reception team mean that there’s someone on hand to take care of any niggles. And Hilton Honors Wi-Fi? It never falters. None of these are the prime reason you book a hotel, but they’re the details that mean you come back when you’re next in town.

Children

Several King Guest Rooms can interconnect with twin guest rooms, turning them into mini family suites for adults and kids. There’s also the option to add single rollaway beds to several room types including the King Deluxe Rooms, King Deluxe Panoramic Riverview Rooms, King Premier View Rooms and King Premier Panoramic River View Rooms, transforming them into rooms for three, at an additional cost. And of course cots are complimentary. Both are subject to availability.  All the hotel’s dining spaces have plenty of options for kids but they’ll particularly like the bubble teas and jaffle toasties at Portside Pantry.

Eating and drinking

It’s not often that a hotel restaurant delivers this kind of value and especially not when it comes with a side serving of wall-to-wall waterfront views. Reel Kitchen on Level 2 has both in spades. Portion sizes are huge (the Fremantle octopus with romesco is so generous it could almost feed two) and no details are overlooked, such as the green salad which comes packed with olives and semi-dried tomatoes. At breakfast, it transforms into a spacious buffet, loaded with pastries, hot options and even a Nutella dispenser – a neat touch that the kids will love.

18 Knots Rooftop Bar is the place to be as the sun sets, and you can even progress snacks into a full meal if you order a couple of rounds of stone-baked pizzas. Alternatively,  try a few poolside Casamigos margaritas from the DoubleTree bar team on Level 5.

In a hurry during the day? Portside Pantry has you sorted for coffee and grab-and-go snacks, open Monday to Friday.

Things to book

Parking can be pre-booked at nearby City of Perth Parking on Terrace Road, around 500 metres from the Hotel. It costs $48 for 48 hours.

Notes

Here’s a hot tip: the lounging space near the pool might be the nicest spot in the city to set up a laptop and knock off the morning emails with a coffee. Frangipani trees bring the shade, sofas take care of the seating, the river serves the views and you can take a dip when you’re done.
