Canggu

COMO Uma Canggu, Bali

Arriving in Canggu can feel like stepping into a beautifully choreographed kind of chaos. Scooters weave past SUVs, surfboards jut from car windows, cafés spill onto the pavement and there is a constant hum of movement. It is energetic, creative and slightly unpredictable.

When you turn into COMO Uma Canggu, everything shifts.

The noise softens. The palette turns neutral. Staff greets you with an ease that feels genuine rather than rehearsed. Beyond the open lobby and down a short path, the Indian Ocean stretches out in full view, waves rolling in steady, hypnotic sets.

Set directly on Echo Beach, the resort feels like a calm vantage point above the action. Widely loved by West Australians, it has long held a special place for those who return year after year, yet it somehow manages to offer something new with every visit. From your balcony, you can hear the surf. At sunrise, board riders paddle into silver light. By late afternoon, the COMO Beach Club hums gently with appropriate island-vibe house tunes while the horizon offers theatre.

It’s easy to fall into rhythm quickly here; a yoga or Pilates class in a light-filled studio. A surf lesson that leaves you salty-skinned and exhilarated. A long lunch shaped by COMO Shambhala’s wellness-driven philosophy.

In a part of Bali that rarely sits still, COMO Uma Canggu feels zen and composed. A place to land, reset and watch the tide do its thing.

What’s Around

Canggu has become one of Bali’s most compelling surf enclaves, where rice paddies meet espresso bars and barefoot board riders share space with international creatives.

Echo Beach sits directly in front of the resort, and a short walk along the sand to the left will take you to Times Beach Warung for a super strong espresso. The Lawn Canggu draws a well dressed sunset crowd. Mason delivers confident Mediterranean plates, Skool Kitchen leans into fire and smoke in a dramatic open setting, and Bar Vera has one of the most interesting wine lists in the area.

Tanah Lot’s sea temple is within easy reach for a pilgrimage at dusk, while inland, Ubud’s temples and cycling routes offer a cultural counterpoint to long, salt heavy days on the coast.

But really, much of what you need is right here: one of the best resort pools on the island, surfing, wellness and a horizon that keeps you occupied.

What’s Super Special

Sunset at COMO Beach Club is quietly theatrical. Even on a cloud heavy or moody evening, the sky performs, casting long washes of pink and amber across the ocean while the soundtrack hums gently in the background.

In room dining is refreshingly simple to access via the television. No QR codes or apps. Just browse on screen and make a straightforward phone call to the COMO Beach Club. It feels reassuring and unfussy.

What makes the property truly special, though, is how effortlessly the experience shifts to suit your mood. You can dial it up or dial it down depending on your reason for being there. With a group of friends, it leans beautifully into celebratory territory, the cocktails are outstanding and the energy builds as the sun slips away. Equally, it works perfectly for families, for the health conscious, for the active, or for those simply seeking a calm and polished place to unwind.

Children

Play by COMO provides structured space for younger guests, and the lagoon pool gives families room to spread out. Larger Residences and Penthouses make multi generational stays feel effortless, with kitchens and generous living areas softening the edges of resort life.

Eating and Drinking

Breakfast at COMO Beach Club is part buffet, part à la carte, grounded in COMO Shambhala Kitchen. Order the rice porridge with chicken for something comforting, or the famous ‘real toast’ served at COMO properties globally for over a decade. Add an egg or two for a welcome protein lift. The spread inside is fresh and thoughtful. Vibrant juices, a delightfully moist house-made banana loaf in neat bite-sized squares, LSA mix and chia puddings that provide a solid fibre injection, fresh fruit and a slow-pressed juice bar (pre-bottled).

Lunch continues the wellness thread. Lentil curry, steamed fish with ginger and green goddess soup make it entirely possible to stage a health reset here without rigidity. Yes, there are burgers and fries if you want them. But the balance is the point.

Dinner is exceptionally prepared by a chef who knows his way around proteins. The Jimbaran inspired seafood barbecue, ordered a day in advance, is a standout. Butterflied whole market fish, split jumbo prawns, arrowhead squid and bamboo lobster arrive as an impressive spread of perfectly seasoned ocean treasures, cooked with precision. Accompanied by Indonesian staples like plecing, urab, crisp crudites and a trio of sambals. Dessert might be dadar gulung with pandan crepes, caramelised coconut, banana and coconut sorbet, landing light, just sweet enough and fragrant.

Things to Book

Jimbaran style seafood barbecue at least 24 hours in advance, surf lessons with Tropicsurf, a sunrise yoga class followed by a COMO Shambhala Signature Massage, time in the steam room after a morning in the surf, a purification ceremony at Tirta Empul, sunset drinks at COMO Beach Club.

Notes

Wake early one morning and step onto your balcony before the heat settles in. Watch the first surfers paddle out into a sheet of silver water. Order coffee. At COMO Uma Canggu, the luxury is not just the linens, the spectacular pool or the next level attentive service. It is the permission to move at the pace of the tide.
