Berkeley River Lodge

In our role as a pseudo concierge for all things food, beverage and hospitality experiences, we are often asked at the Guide: Where do I take the person who has been everywhere? How do I genuinely create a moment of surprise and delight that makes their jaw drop? There are few places in Australia that deliver a true sense of remoteness, and Berkeley River Lodge is one of them.

Reached only by air, the lodge rests lightly on the dunes of Balanggarra Country, facing the Timor Sea on one side and the Berkeley Rivermouth on the other. The landscape is raw and cinematic, yet the experience unfolds with an ease that feels almost meditative. Days move at a slower pace. Colours shift subtly. The lodge seems to dissolve into the coastline, which is part of its quiet magic.

As Australia’s most remote luxury lodge, Berkeley River has built its reputation on simplicity, privacy and thoughtful immersion, with design now a defining pillar thanks to a recent refurbishment. The five-night Kimberley Immersion is the only way to stay, giving guests the time to absorb the atmosphere of the region. This is wilderness that feels expansive but not overwhelming, and the sense of privilege comes not from opulence but from access to a landscape few ever see.

Need to Knows

The lodge has eighteen adults only villas, each angled toward uninterrupted water or rivermouth dune views. Villas include air conditioning, a king bed, a private deck, an open air bathroom with a freestanding tub positioned beneath the Kimberley sky, and an outdoor rain shower. One guest described one of their most memorable moments as soaking in a starlit bath in pure darkness, sipping chamomile tea and watching shooting stars. With zero light pollution, the experience feels iconic and enriching for the soul, perfect for stargazing in complete serenity.

What’s There

Each villa is a self-contained retreat with an emphasis on light, easy living and far reaching views. Interiors are pared back so the landscape can take the lead. The open-air bathrooms feel elemental, especially when the freestanding tub catches the moonlight. The private decks are made for slow mornings, quiet afternoons and the rare pleasure of watching distant weather drift across the sea.

Dunes Restaurant is the social centre of the lodge, a breezy structure with a pool that seems to merge into the horizon. The Kimberley Spa sits beside it, offering cooling treatments shaped by the environment, including a one-hour signature treatment for each guest. Morning Movement Sessions will be introduced for the 2026 season, bringing sunrise yoga, pilates, breath and stretch classes as the Timor Sea glows into view.

What’s Around

The lodge is a launching point for exploring the iconic Berkeley River, gorges, waterfalls, beaches and cultural sites of Balanggarra Country. Villas sit between thirty and four hundred metres from Dunes Restaurant, with buggies moving guests across the property. All touring departs from the central lodge and includes river cruises through towering red cliffs, guided walks to ancient rock art, coastal drives that end in sundowners, fishing trips in search of barramundi and inland excursions to shaded waterholes and rugged sandstone country. The wildlife is also remarkable and a unique drawcard for the Kimberley, with sightings ranging from jabiru and colourful kingfishers to tiny wrens and other birdlife, along with flatback turtles that nest on the beach and the ancient saltwater crocodiles that inhabit the waterways.

A helicopter flight over King George Falls or to the summit of Mount Casuarina is available for those seeking a rare aerial perspective. All other experiences are included within the stay.

What’s Super Special

This is a truly wild, remote and pristine corner of Australia, visited by fewer than fourteen thousand people since the lodge opened in 2012. The exclusivity is genuine, with only air access and no more than thirty six guests at any time. For many, the arrival experience is jaw dropping. There is a noticeable shift in energy among guests as the private scenic flight comes in to land, first sweeping past the rivermouth and lodge with eyes wide open, then touching down on the outback airstrip where the team waits with French champagne in hand. It feels almost rock star, and from that moment you know you are in for something extraordinary. The five night stay is intentional, allowing guests to fully understand the scale, quiet and cultural depth of the Kimberley.

Children

Berkeley River Lodge is an adult only property.

Eating and Drinking

The culinary adventure truly starts from the moment guests arrive. As soon as they step off their private scenic flight, they are greeted with French champagne and whisked away in a luxury safari vehicle to Dunes Restaurant for a warm and generous welcome. Lunches are unhurried and often shaped by the daily catch. As evening settles over the dunes, dinner moves between degustations, three course menus, generous shared plates and the new Barefoot Barbecue, a relaxed but polished experience held on the sand as the Berkeley Rivermouth turns from gold to indigo. A Kimberley Pantry offers savoury and sweet bites throughout the day, and each villa now includes a thoughtfully stocked mini bar.

The drinks program is both considered and expansive, spanning Australian and international wines, French Champagne, premium spirits, cocktails, mocktails, craft beers and freshly squeezed juices. A deeper focus on Western Australian producers will anchor the 2026 season.

Sous Chef Christian, who joined the lodge in 2024 and steps into the Head Chef role in 2026, brings a warm and intuitive touch honed in his Nonna’s kitchen in Napoli. His cooking blends Italian tradition with the constraints and creativity of working in one of the most remote kitchens in the country. Expect charcoal focaccia still warm from the oven, ricotta gnocchi with plum tomato and goat cheese foam and a deeply comforting porchetta slow cooked for thirty six hours. His cannoli, crisp and light, already have their following.

Things to Book

The five-night Kimberley Immersion includes all meals, beverages, experiences and return scenic flights from Darwin. The only additional ‘bookable’ activity is a helicopter experience with Truenorth Helicopters; everything else is woven seamlessly into the stay.
