The rejuvenation of this storied corner pub, first opened in 1882, is part of a trend across Perth’s pub scene. Centuries-old properties brought bang up to date, as a breed of multifaceted venues are born. On the ground floor, you’ll find fine diner Fleur (also on our list of 100 best places to eat in WA), and, in what was the corner bar, Willi’s, with a line in Detroit-style deep-dish pizza. Upstairs, The Royal proper boasts a classic wraparound verandah – prime real estate for much of the year. While there are the hallmarks of a classic pub, it’s in the contemporary vein, from the modern art to a menu that skirts the line of surf and turf. If menu paralysis is a very real thing for you, opt for the daily special – the fish on a Friday or the roast beef and gravy roll on a Monday are simple classics all done markedly well.
