Sweetwater is “so Perth” and that’s a good thing. It’s on a rooftop in East Fremantle with sweeping views of the harbour and the leafy streets of old East Freo. It celebrates sunshine and outdoor drinking and dining. It’s what the Aussie beer garden has become – still the same carefree vibe – but re-tooled for the 21st century.
It’s cocktails are seriously good, many of them with a South East Asian flavour profile. They’re well made too.
Thw food is a winner here. There have been lots of comparisons made about the Asian plates: “it’s like Chin Chin or Longrain in Melbourne.” And that’s true, to an extent.
Salt and pepper cuttlefish with kim chi aioli, coriander and green shallot; Steamed prawn and ginger dumplings with sticky black vinegar; and Shredded sticky beef with green papaya, cherry tomato and soft herbs are the sorts of punchy, bold Asian-inspired dishes one might also find at Mama San or Sarong in Bali.
Sticky pork belly with green nam jim, asian herbs, pomelo and praline is a direct assault on the taste buds. It might be a cacophony of flavours and textures but there’s balance too and the total enjoyment of flavour that leaps off the plate and smacks you in the mouth.
The vibe here is generous and fun. You can dine on the deck, in the sit-down section, on chichi lounges or at hi-tops. And there’s lots of room to just hang and have a cocktail too.
