Small in stature but big in character, Swallow Bar has been a quiet achiever in Maylands before Perth even knew what a small bar was. Art deco style oozes from every corner with old train seats for booths, golden oldies flowing from the speakers and a bar keep that knows a damn good martini.

French bistro style food is not usually designed to share – it’s a plating thing. But here, dishes are designed to do just that, despite their Francophone leanings. The food is rustic, but appealing. Chicken and Pedro Ximinez paté is exceptional. As are spinach and gruyere croquettes. Those after something more substantial can look to the specials board or go for the steak frites, which is one of the best steak frites in P-Town.

A small, eclectic mix of wine and beer is on offer – it’s obvious from the diversity of the drinks offer that a fair bit of effort has gone into its curation.  Cocktails are good too, from negronis to old fashioneds, and more modern mixes.

Be sure to check out the gorgeous courtyard when you visit.
