An ode to the ocean and its seafaring history, this music-inspired bar with meze plates and retro cocktails adds a little rock and roll flair to Fremantle’s West End.

With a retro fit-out and a menu that leans heavily on the influences of Fremantle’s past, Ode to Sirens, tucked in the side of heritage-listed P&O Hotel, is the latest venture from two of WA’s most seasoned restaurateurs, Daniel Goodsell and Nic Trimboli. On the plate, seasonal and WA-sourced ingredients take diners on a journey around the Aegean and farther afield. Think, weed and feta pide to slices of baked eggplant with tahini yoghurt, and spiced with zhug; charred Linley Valley pork sausage with crunchy ouzo cucumbers; halloumi saganaki drizzled with honey and lemon. Or larger plates of mushroom moussaka, Amelia Park lamb yiro, or Shark Bay ruby snapper salted by olives and capers.

Classic cocktails bare names inspired by 1970s hit songs (I Like Pina Coladas; Pisco Inferno; Major Tom Collins). The wine list leans to low intervention producers from WA and a smattering of South Australian labels with Greek wines by the bottle from textural Assyrtiko to light Agiorgitiko and a mix of Aussie draught beer served in a pony to pint-sized pour. DJs play vintage vinyl reflecting much of the wall art of album cover posters from Bowie to Dylan. The best seats in the house? The festoon-lit courtyard, an excellent spot to while away an evening with a bit of rock and roll flair.
