A modern take on Vietnamese is rightfully a new Leederville lunch must-visit.

Undoubtedly this Vietnamese lunch spot on Oxford Street will be a case of ‘eat on the run’ for many, but grabbing a chair (hot property) and taking a moment is the way to go. Owner and chef Bac Pham, who has in the past been part of teams at the likes of Petition in the State Buildings, started with pop-ups before deciding to take North 54 full-time. The name is an homage to his grandparents who fled the north of Vietnam for the south back in 1954. But don’t imagine that Pham is strictly adhering to a rigid culinary view – it’s very much about his own vision. You won’t find the trad banh mi thit, but there is a roast pork iteration topped with minced pork and lemongrass. You’ll find Pham using whipped miso tofu, XO sauce, mint gremolata, while the son-in-law egg bánh mì with gooey, deep-fried eggs and tamarind sauce has caught the imagination of Perth diners. Noodle and rice bowls are perhaps less cult-like but no less deserving of your attention, along with spring rolls and fried chicken wings with a fish sauce caramel.
