Eclectic Highgate bistro serving hearty pan-European fare with personality, passion and a seriously good wine list.

Wearing its personality openly, this Highgate favourite is part neighbourhood bistro, part living room. It trades polish for warmth, filling the space with eclectic art, close-set tables and a DJ quietly spinning vinyl in the corner. Relaxed, sociable and unmistakably personal, it’s the kind of place where conversation matters as much as what’s on the plate. Food follows suit, leaning into generous, pan-European comfort. Chicken-liver pâté is smooth and rich, slathered on crusty baguette, while Portuguese sardines are paired with pilaf rice, preserved lemon and green onion – savoury and deeply warming. Coq au vin is the anchor: free-range chicken cooked on the bone with mushroom, bacon and wine, the sauce sinking happily into buttery mash, while crème brûlée rounds things out with familiar, old-school satisfaction. Drinks are treated with care, an impressive international wine list with no less than four Champagnes by the bottle keeping the night in motion. Owner Andrew Ryan brings an easy confidence to the floor and clear pride in what’s being served. Le Vivant is unpretentious but assured, grounded in generosity, flavour and a genuine sense of welcome.
