A century old pub finds a lease of new life.
Next year the Denmark Hotel will nudge a hundred years at the centre of this Great Southern town. With a massive recent refurb, the lodgings have been brought back to life as The Lodge, and the on-site boutique bottleshop, Denmark Drops, helmed by two of the region’s most dynamic winemakers, is news in itself. It can be difficult to get across Australia’s largest geographic wine region – its subregions taking in the Porongurups, Mount Barker, Albany, Frankland River and Denmark itself – in one short visit. But this is the bottle shop that does the region proud. The local-first ethos is carried through to the bar, across the wine list, and a roster of local beer on tap. Food is no exception. Expect local producers to be featured prominently between a classic Scotch fillet and the Plantagenet Pork dumplings.
