Classic coastal vibes meets modern all-day pub.
Sandy feet are welcome from 6am for coffee and breakfast, as are four-legged friends if the dog bowls on the expansive deck are anything to go by. While this modern City Beach pub is new to many, replacing Odyssea after almost a decade, it will revive memories of classic kiosk ‘Bert’s shop’ which refreshed beach goers until the 1970s. The two Bert’s are very different, perhaps saying something of our beach-side expectations these days. Both however, were built to excel on summer days. The deck is definitely the magnet for most. Inside, its modern, light tones and pared-back decor – but, to be honest, it’s the sunsets and the Indian Ocean vista that are the focal point here. Balter Brewing Company is the predominant pour, but you will find the likes of Found Easy (at just 2.9%) on tap as a local option, with more good WA selections in the fridge. Wine excels by-the-glass with a larger than expected sparkling selection, but then this is perhaps a prime celebration spot. While the tendency for some may be to order several pizzas, smash a few pints and fight for a slice, there is the more virtuous route – salads packed with, say, broccoli, chickpeas, rocket and feta, with maple-tahini dressing and optional added protein. Whatever the weather, you can’t go wrong with simple, classic fish and chips using firm, white Spanish mackerel.
