Mandoon Estate
Set on the banks of the Swan River, Mandoon Estate has long been a cornerstone of the Swan Valley wine story, in Australia’s second-oldest wine region. Through a tasting at the bar or a range of experiences designed to be interactive rather than observational, guests can engage with viticulture, blending and tasting.
Need to Knows
There are currently two wine experiences on offer, which differ in the level of wine immersion you seek. If you’re short on time, the Wine & Canapé Flight is a seated experience enjoyed in the cellar door, priced at $40pp. It pairs five premium Mandoon Estate wines with five canapé-sized dishes and can be enjoyed most days, with bookings recommended but not essential.
For those after a deeper dive into the world of wine at Mandoon, The Perfect Blend is a hands-on, guided blending experience priced at $110pp. Guests will have the opportunity to create, bottle and label their own custom blend to take home.
Both experiences are hosted by knowledgeable cellar door staff and are suitable for guests aged 18 years and over, welcoming local, interstate and international visitors alike.
What to Expect
The Wine & Canapé Flight is best approached as a ‘choose your own adventure’ introduction to food and wine pairing. The experience begins with a glass of the Estate’s reserve sparkling wine before moving through five Mandoon Estate wines, each matched with a canapé-sized dish. Guests might notice how acidity cuts through smoked salmon, how Chardonnay complements richer elements, or how the sweetness of the Estate’s rosé lifts tomato on focaccia. There’s no formal instruction or critical judgement. Instead, guests are encouraged to taste, reflect and decide for themselves what works and why, making it an especially welcoming experience for beginners.
For a more immersive afternoon, The Perfect Blend invites guests behind the scenes of winemaking itself. The experience begins with guided tastings of the Old Vine Shiraz, Old Vine Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, each explored on its own before any blending begins. Then, working with measured 100ml pours and a structured, lab-style worksheet, guests record tasting notes and preferences, learning how structure, aromatics and balance shift when wines are combined. With an expert host guiding the process, blends are refined and adjusted until each guest arrives at their ideal composition. The final blend is then bottled, gassed and sealed, finished with a personalised Mandoon Estate label to take home.
What’s Special
What distinguishes Mandoon’s experiences is their emphasis on participation. Rather than prescribing what guests should taste or enjoy, the team creates space for exploration, encouraging confidence in personal preference in a world of wine that is often seen as intimidating.
Both experiences demystify wine without diluting it, offering structure where helpful, freedom where it matters, and leaving guests more curious about wine than when they arrived.
Getting there
Mandoon Estate is located in Caversham, approximately 30 minutes from Perth’s CBD. Guests are encouraged to arrange a nominated driver or use rideshare services when visiting, particularly if enjoying multiple tastings.
Children
All listed experiences at Mandoon Estate are restricted to guests aged 18 years and over.
Other Things to Book
Mandoon Estate is home to several dining venues, making it easy to extend your visit with lunch or dinner before or after an experience. Its central Swan Valley location also makes it an ideal starting point for a broader day of winery visits across the region.
