When it comes to a city’s dining scene, few culinary creations inspire as much ferocious devotion as the humble burger.

A perfect burger is more than the sum of its parts- it’s an artful balance of flavours and textures, where every element plays its role in crafting an unforgettable bite. Across Perth, a vibrant collection of burger spots has elevated this classic comfort food into a gastronomic experience, catering to everything from nostalgic cravings to adventurous palates.

Whether it’s the meticulous craftsmanship of a perfectly seared smashburger at Bad Love, the unapologetic indulgence of a towering double stack at Johnny’s Burger Joint, or a bold fusion of global flavours at Upperhand, the city’s burger scene celebrates creativity and quality in equal measure.

Here are some of the best burger places in Perth.

Big Rigz

Once upon a time, Big Rigz was just a small corner shop on Fremantle’s South Terrace, dishing up mouth-watering (and enormous) burgers. Word quickly spread however, and in 2023 the restaurant moved to a bigger premises down the road to make room for its growing and loyal fanbase. The team in the kitchen creates everything from local produce – every item, even down to the sauce, is made fresh in-house. The signature Big Rigz burger is their take on a classic beef burger; while there are more uncommon varieties like Spicy Rigz, with jalapeños and gochujang mayo, or Korean Flying Rigz, with chicken kimchi and pickled daikon.

Alfred’s Kitchen

The original and (perhaps) the best, Alfred’s Kitchen is Perth’s longest-running roadside burger kitchen, dating all the way back to 1946. It’s not just the locals in Alfred’s charming neighbourhood of Guildford who frequent the restaurant – visitors come from near and far to try the classic, no-nonsense burgers in Alfred’s heritage setting. A unique feature is the restored 1906 train carriage, providing ample seating and a rather nostalgic dining experience. In the cooler months, the inviting outdoor fire pit adds to the ambiance, making Alfred’s Kitchen a must-visit for both locals and visitors seeking a taste of Perth’s culinary history.

Drasko’s

What does one get when they combine Noma alumni with Nashville-inspired hot chicken? The answer is Drasko’s. Restaurant co-owner Drasko Jankovic spent time in Copenhagen working at the four-time world’s best restaurant winner, and has used his learnings to provide Drasko’s visitors with one of the tastiest fried chicken burgers they’re likely to find. The entire menu is made in-house from local ingredients that have been farmed with love. Even the pickles and hot sauces are house-fermented, and bread and burger buns baked using a 100-year old woodfired oven. As for the burger itself – Drasko’s Signature Sando is a juicy breast of spicy fried chicken, with house-made sauce, cheddar, slaw and pickles ensconced in a woodfired milk bun.

Short Order

With eateries in Fremantle, Perth CBD and Baldivis opening soon, Short Order has become a go-to spot for the burger aficionados of Perth. The restaurant serves up classics for the purists, as well as unique burgers like the Firey Short Order Burger with jalapenos and sriracha mayo, or the FNZ Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, with fried chicken, chilli oil, slaw and pickles. The stand-out of their offering however is the seasonal and limited edition Manjimup Truffle Chicken Burger, which graces the Short Order menu for only a short time each winter. Crispy chicken is topped with cheese, confettied with generous shavings of fresh truffle, and ensconced in a classic Short Order bun.

Bad Love Burger Co

Bad Love Burger Co started as the celebrated Smashburger BBQ pop-up, which first introduced Perth to the art of the “smashburger” – a signature grill technique that creates irresistibly juicy beef patties with signature lacy, caramelised edges. Now a beloved bricks-and-mortar diner, Bad Love Burger Co is celebrated for its ‘craft burger’ approach, offering an exceptional menu of beef smashburgers, fried chicken and vegetarian delights, all complemented by local craft beers and indulgent desserts.

Eggspot

It’s not hard to see why Angove Street’s Eggspot became a cult lunch favourite among nearby ECU university students. These days, the egg-focused burger shop has expanded beyond just North Perth, adding a Fremantle Markets stall to its name, and word has most definitely spread beyond just the university cohort. The restaurant reimagines the timeless trio of eggs, bread and cheese, and transforms it into innovative, modern burgers that delight no matter the time of day. Their Big Brekki burger – a flavoursome melding of fluffy scrambled eggs, avocado, bacon, melted cheese and hickory barbeque sauce all enveloped by two soft buns – is a mouth-watering morning treat; while the signature Eggspot Cheeseburger of scrambled eggs, signature cumin and mustard beef patty, melted cheese, house pickles, ketchup and housemade chipotle aioli makes for a Friday lunch.

Two Stacks

Previously housed in the Sunshine Harvester Works food court, Two Stacks has moved out to its own independent digs in South Fremantle. Specialising in the ‘smash burger’, the menu is tight with just four options to choose from – however seasonal specials do make their way onto Two Stacks’ socials for a limited time. Follow them on Instagram to stay in the loop. The shipping container restaurant is a stone’s throw from Fremantle’s South Beach, and is open until 9pm – perfect for a quick beach feed after an evening ocean dip.

Upperhand Burgers

Burger-come-cocktail bars are precisely what the world needs more of, and Upperhand on Swanborune’s Claremont Crescent delivers. The kitchen team takes pride in their meticulously crafted beef blend, which is the hero of every burger on the menu. But they don’t stop there – Upperhand really elevates the dining experience with interesting sides inspired by the bold flavours of Asia. Standouts like the Chinese BBQ roast duck fries, tofu poppers and Taiwanese fried chicken transform each meal into a vibrant fusion of culinary innovation and indulgence. Pair that with a margarita from their cocktail menu, and you’re set.

Johnny’s Burger Joint

One for the purists, Johnny’s Burger Joint was born out of an adoration for classic, no-nonsense American burgers. The Canning Vale restaurant is all about serving up truly authentic burgers – stacked high, dripping with flavour and unapologetically classic. You won’t find any out-of-the-box options on their menu, just good old-fashioned burgers. Crunchy golden fries and thick indulgent shakes are also menu staples, adding to the whole American diner-esque experience.
