The Best Accommodation In The Margaret River Region

Southcamp

One way to describe Southcamp? It’s like a caravan park or campsite — only cooler. After all, there aren’t many caravan parks that have their own brewhouse attached, or that serve cheeky Mimosas or Bloody Marys at breakfast. Perhaps a better way to think of Southcamp is that it’s like its own little Dunsborough indie village, where the days are lazy and the living is easy.

The 18 modern cabins are grouped cosily together and have everything you need and nothing you don’t. The king beds are roomy and comfy, there’s a nook for seating, and the bathrooms are remarkably spacious. They’ve even thrown in a record player to crank up the retro vibes. If you need to hunker down with more than just your significant other, there are also two family cabins with bunks and a couple of one and two-bedroom apartments. The latter feature fully equipped kitchens, laundries and balconies. A home away from home.

But forget the rooms; it’s what’s outside that’s the true lure. Start your day with coffee and pastries and — go on — that glass of sparkling at brekkie, then jump on one of the property’s electric bikes and meander down to the beach before coming back to camp for pints from the brewhouse, pizza or tacos and local live music. And when you’re done, your perfectly soundproofed cabin or apartment is waiting, so you can leave the party behind. ’Til tomorrow, anyway.

Chambré Estate Margaret River

A stay at Chambré Estate is choose-your-own-adventure territory, whether that’s using the three-hectare property as a “Down South” retreat, or a base to explore the Margaret River region.

Newly revitalised, the whitewashed brick cabins and suites sit amongst landscaped grounds. It’s central, just five minutes from Margs’s main strip by car, but the Estate feels miles away all the same. You’re bound to encounter lots of local wildlife, including kookaburras and kangaroos, and a canopy of 200-year-old marri trees casts a tranquil spell over the property.

Co-owner Jess Dodd, an interior designer, has created rooms that mirror the tones of the South West. Think the red dirt of a country road, or the cooler ocean palette. There’s plenty of thought throughout the fit-out with well-placed lighting, quality bedding, recessed TVs, and small but well-equipped kitchenettes. The property is a work in progress and repeat visits will no doubt reveal new upgrades, like the recently added communal sauna. How’s the serenity? Very high, indeed.

Cherubino Guest Houses

A stay at Cherubino has an air of vigneron role-play about it. Look out over the Wilyabrup Valley and imagine, even if just for a night or two, that you’re the steward of a wine estate in one of the world’s most revered wine regions. While the three guest houses, which sleep between six and 12 guests, are set in their own six acres, the vineyards beyond planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, semillon, and sauvignon blanc are a constant reminder that there’s serious wine tasting to be done here.

The three guest houses have different configurations, but they share a level of quality that’s difficult to come back from. Think plush couches perfect for lounging, kitchens built for entertaining, and an expansive 24-seat dining room.

For the uninitiated, Cherubino is a family-owned winery, headed by Larry and Edwina Cherubino. Their vineyards are found in the Margaret River region with its Indian Ocean influence, as well as cooler-climate Pemberton in the Southern Forests, and the Great Southern further east. The intricacies of winemaking across those varied vineyards and regions are best unpacked over a leisurely cellar-door tasting, and maybe a mixed case or two for the stay.

Edge Luxury Villas

Billed as a romantic retreat, Edge Luxury Villas could just as easily be a place for a little solo self-care. The adults-only property is located in Wilyabrup — known as the cradle of the Margaret River wine region — and the guest experience is absolutely paramount for owners Cam and Clare Kissell, a husband-and-wife team who’ve created the unique accommodation from the ground up.

Each of the four villas looks over the property’s lake, with a picture-book bridge that’s asking to be snapped, perhaps from the freestanding stone bath or overhead rainwater shower, positioned for a view. The wood-burning fireplace in each comes in handy over the cooler months, too, when you can enjoy the flicker, crackle and pop from the sofa or the bed.

While the villas are huddled together, they’re detached enough and thoughtfully laid out so that you don’t overlook your neighbours once inside or out on the enclosed balconies. Better yet, there’s little or no noise thanks to a build quality and sound-absorbing design that has garnered industry awards. Added touches that support the locally minded ethos include wine and coffee from the region as well as works by local artist Karen Seamen and Vasse Virgin body products.

You can rest easy here, too, knowing the villas receive a green tick for being fully off-grid and certified for sustainable tourism. Guilt-free luxury, indeed.

Whicher Ridge Wines Heyscape Cabin

Heyscape could be seen as part of the tiny trend, but this young and eco-friendly West Australian company is also tapping into a movement towards disconnecting (even just momentarily) from daily life in order to connect more deeply with the natural world.

Their 26 tiny-house-style cabins, dotted around the state, feel like real retreats, and luckily for you, their cabins on family-owned Whicher Ridge Wines are just 40 minutes from Margaret River.

The ‘Alisa’ cabin is a meeting of Aussie country design and modern sensibility, with Colorbond steel exteriors and ply on the interior (a favoured material of many modern architects). The off-grid cabins are solar powered, and while you must keep an eye on usage, they’re all equipped with reverse-cycle air conditioning and the ‘Premium’ category cabins are even kitted out with fully stocked wine fridges. Appliances are integrated, including a small two-ring burner, and outside you might even find an Everdure by Heston Blumenthal barbecue. Fancy!

If you’d prefer to head further south, there are also cabins in Yallingup and Denmark.

The Best Accommodation In Busselton

The Timothée Resort

As soon as you set foot on the grounds of The Timothée Resort on the outskirts of Busselton, the world seems to fade into a pastel Slim Aarons fantasy. There’s the palm-lined pool, surrounded by mint-green striped umbrellas. Airy rooms are styled in tones of cream and terracotta, with terrazzo bathroom floors. And the low-rise motel setup is right out of a Brady Bunch family special.

Yet The Timothée isn’t jumping on any slapdash pastiche bandwagon. There’s truly thoughtful attention to detail here, meshing retro Mediterranean style with luxury. Little touches — locally commissioned artwork honouring the hotel’s namesake, seafaring French explorer Thomas Timothée Vasse; the powder-coated bent wire clothes racks and wall hooks handmade by co-owner Alice Brady and her dad Trevor – prove that there’s a tonne of heart poured into every bit of your stay.

The perfect Timothée day? A lazy, late wake-up followed by a stroll along the Vasse River into town for a gigantic cinnamon scroll from Dusty Buns. Then, a walk along the Busselton Jetty, before a long afternoon by the pool. To finish, round things off with the resort’s secret weapon: a truly excellent chicken curry from Curry Port, the old-school Indian restaurant on-site. The Bradys never had it this good.

Karri Valley Resort

RAC Karri Valley Resort channels classic North American vibes. Here, you’re both up at the lake and amidst Pemberton’s epic karri forests. And the best part? You’ve got all the comforts you’d expect from an RAC property on hand, no matter whether you hunker down in one of the caravan or camping sites, or rest your head in a lakeside room or chalet. Lakeside rooms have the well-appointed feel of a city hotel, but with a lakeside balcony that’s perfect for sundowners (and perhaps the occasional visit from a feathered friend).

While the idea of a resort may conjure thoughts of crowds and non-stop action, you’re never too far from a quiet woodland spot that’s perfect for what the Japanese call ‘shinrin-yoku’, or forest bathing. While there’s certainly no shame in just slowing things down here and soaking in the beauty of the natural surroundings, you’ve got activities galore at your disposal, too, from fishing and canoeing to archery and tennis. Perhaps the ultimate amenity is the freedom to take it all at your own pace.

The Best Accommodation In Denmark

Chimes Spa Retreat Denmark

Dip into the bag of spa writing clichés and “a break from the daily grind” would surely be right up there. But clichés are clichés for a reason, after all, and Chimes Spa Retreat offers that much-needed break and then some. For many visitors, getting to Denmark on the wild Southern Ocean coast of the Great Southern is a bit of a mission. Yet, those in the know will tell you that it’s classic road-trip territory for those venturing from Perth or those who’ve looped in from the west and Margaret River. As you allow yourself to go with the flow at Chimes Spa Retreat, those long-drive aches or any residual life stresses dissipate completely.

A purpose-built retreat on Mount Shadforth (or Wakundup as it’s also known), the property has been given some serious TLC by owner Jeanne Herholdt. A substantial renovation brought natural materials into play, and added not just polish, but all-important personal touches: art that had hung in Herholdt’s South African family home, and a constantly evolving exhibition of works by local artists. What’s more, you’ve got barbecue facilities, a pool table, board games and a working fireplace at your disposal, so even if spa treatments aren’t on the agenda, you’ll be able to unwind your way. A retreat in the truest sense.
