Emma Farrelly 2017 Winner

With the guidance of The Good Food Guide board member, wine specialist, Paul McArdle, the 2017 jury debated this award long and hard. There are three or four sommeliers in Western Australia who are at the very top of their game – world standard, if you will.

To get to the top of this small Perth band of globally respected sommeliers, you’ve got to be very, very good.

We are pleased to say that this year’s winner ticked every box. A well-executed complex, multi-venue brief; a well-deployed, regular training regime for wine and kitchen staff – demonstrated by junior wine staff who are among the most informed and customer-focused in WA; the ability to source rare, interesting, small-producer wines; and innate ability to construct wine menus with depth and breadth, a little excitement and big titles to celebrate with; and, critically, our sommelier of the year for 2017 understands food and chefs and how to pair, not just food and wine, but to fuse together chef and sommelier cultures into a cohesive, seamless service offer.

The West Australian Sommelier Of The year is head sommelier at the COMO At The Treasury Hotel, with direct responsibility for the wine programs at Wildflower, Petition Kitchen, Petition Wine Bar & Merchant, Post Restaurant and Long Chim. She is Emma Farrelly.
